National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government sector public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year in 1969. Aimed at developing student's personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community.
Aim
The programme aims to instilling the idea of social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid.
Key factors
- Formation: NSS was introduced in response to the educational policy recommendations of the Kothari Commission (1964-66), which emphasized the need to involve students in social and community service.
- Launch: NSS was officially launched on September 24, 1969, with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of students through voluntary community service.
- Expansion: Over the years, NSS has expanded its reach, and it is now one of the largest student volunteer organizations in the world. It operates in schools, colleges, and universities across India.
- Activities: NSS volunteers engage in a wide range of activities, including blood donation camps, tree planting, cleanliness drives, educational and health-related programs, and disaster relief efforts.
- Educational Component: NSS also has an educational component, where students learn about social issues, leadership, and community development through camps, seminars, and workshops.
- Impact: NSS has made a significant impact in various areas, including healthcare, education, environmental conservation, and disaster response. It has helped in fostering a spirit of social responsibility among young people in India.
NSS continues to play a crucial role in promoting civic engagement, social awareness, and community service among Indian youth, contributing to the nation's development and welfare.
